Insect Portraits, due to be released May 2025, is a portrait photography book celebrating Irish insects

Each subject is accompanied by a short, often quirky, story regarding the subject. For example, caterpillars that incite a flash mob to scare away predators; bacteria that are ‘feminising’ entire insect species; bomb-sniffing moths; the story of when a town in France brought legal proceedings against the black vine weevil for “depredations ... and incalculable injury” on their vineyards; dragonflies who can’t help laying their eggs on car bonnets, to the detriment of the eggs; flies who have somewhat lost the ability to hunt, yet must still provide a dead insect as a nuptial gift, and the almost comical schemes they have devised to overcome this evolutionary misstep.

I believe a book showcasing the abundant ‘personality’ of insects comes at a critical period when people are starting to appreciate the crucial role insects play in our everyday lives and the devasting consequences of biodiversity collapse.
